Pakistan now has one of the fastest growing distributed solar markets in the world. Research from Ember and Renewables First estimates that the country has around 38GW of distributed solar capacity spread across residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural sectors. As this solar base keeps expanding, the next task is to make that energy more flexible and available when businesses need it most.
Trina Storage, the global battery energy storage arm of Trinasolar, says Pakistan’s growing solar base is driving more interest in solar plus storage systems. This interest is especially strong for utility scale projects and microgrids built for commercial and industrial users. A report from Renewables First estimates that Pakistan imported 4.6 GWh of battery energy storage systems in 2025. This marks a growth of 220 percent compared to the year before.
Adding storage does not mean replacing existing solar assets. A well designed solar plus storage system can help businesses make better use of renewable energy, improve flexibility in daily operations and build a more resilient energy strategy. Still, adding battery storage to an existing solar setup is not a simple plug and play task. Every project needs a careful review of the site’s electrical layout, inverter setup, demand pattern, equipment compatibility, energy management system, safety requirements and business goals.
For many retrofit projects, an AC coupled setup offers a practical way forward. This approach lets battery storage work alongside an existing solar system through its own Power Conversion System, allowing much of the original solar infrastructure to stay in place. Even so, compatibility must be checked at the system level, covering electrical interfaces, communication systems, controls and compliance with relevant IEC and UL standards.
